More About Surgery
Breathing freely is such a simple action, but how much do you appreciate it when you have issues with the nasal membrane? A deviated septum can cause chronic maxillary sinusitis and partial loss of the sense of smell due to lack of adequate stimulation of the olfactory receptors. Patients often come to the Yurchenko Team with such requests for restoration of breathing. The main purpose of the nose is to warm the air and supply the lungs with enough air. However, aesthetic correction of the nose shape can be performed simultaneously with the correction of the septum. This surgery is called rhinoseptoplasty.
Rhinoseptoplasty is a combined surgical procedure that includes correction of the nasal septum, nasal dorsum, and nasal tip. It combines functional and cosmetic aspects, providing improvements to both health and appearance.
Indications
Indications for rhinoseptoplasty can be aesthetic and functional. The list includes:
- difficulty breathing due to curvature of the nasal septum;
- chronic sinusitis or frequent nose bleeding;
- traumatic nasal injuries;
- dissatisfaction with the shape or size of the nose;
- nose hump;
- curved, displaced, depressed nasal dorsum;
- cysts, perforations and neoplasms on the nasal septum;
displacement or deflection of the nasal septum, narrowing of the passages makes breathing difficult and causes frequent sinusitis. One surgery allows improving the functionality of the nose and get the nose of your dreams at the same time.
Results
- Rhinoseptoplasty allows achieving significant results:
- Improving breathing and eliminating the symptoms of chronic nasal diseases.
- Improving self-esteem and satisfaction with the appearance.
- Restore facial symmetry and proportionality.
Preparation
Before the surgery, it is necessary to undergo a detailed consultation with a surgeon (online or offline), undergo tests and conduct the necessary examinations. A doctor will provide recommendations on how to prepare for the surgery, which may include discontinuation of certain medications.
Examinations include the following: complete blood count, urine test, biochemical analysis (ALT, AST, urea, creatinine, total protein, total, direct and indirect bilirubin, glucose), coagulation panel, WR, HBsAg, HCV, HIV, Blood type, Rh factor, ECG, X-ray (not older than 1 year) and CT of the nose. It is also necessary to make an appointment with a general practitioner and an anesthesiologist.
Techniques of the surgery
There are two main techniques of rhinoseptoplasty: open and closed.
Open rhinoseptoplasty. During this surgery, a small incision is made in the columella (the skin between the nostrils), which allows the surgeon to gain better access to the nasal structures. This method is used for complex cases where significant correction is required.
Closed rhinoseptoplasty. All incisions are made inside the nose, which makes the scars invisible. This method is suitable for less complex corrections.
During the surgery, the surgeon fixes the displacement of the septum, removes bones and cartilage growths, and creates a new shape of the nasal dorsum and tip.
Recovery
Recovery after rhinoplasty is an important stage that determines the final outcome of the surgery. Plaster cast and tamponade are applied to the nose immediately after the surgery.
The first days after surgery. After rhinoplasty, the patient usually stays in the clinic for one night for observation. Upon discharge, the tamponade is removed from the new passages
in 2–3 days after surgery. It is important to follow the doctor’s recommendations for nasal care after returning home. This includes saline rinsing and antibiotics for 10 days. On the 7th–10th day, the doctor removes the fixing bandage or splint and assesses the rate of healing.
It is necessary to follow certain recommendations regarding physical activity after rhinoplasty. During the first month, you should completely avoid physical activity, only walks of up to three kilometers are allowed. Sports activities should be completely excluded for the first month. Do not make any sudden movements, and during the first three days it is important to keep calm, avoid prolonged standing and walking, as well as fatigue. Do not lift heavy things: the maximum weight allowed is a small bouquet of flowers.
After the surgery, the doctor prescribes medications, including antibiotics, so drinking alcohol is prohibited during the first week. It is necessary to rinse the nasal vestibule with hydrogen peroxide solution twice a day and avoid inclination. Do not take off your clothes over your head for 30 days. Sleep gently on your side or back, avoiding pressure on the nose.
Also, avoid spicy, fragrant, salty, and hot foods for 25 days, and do not tense your facial muscles or cry for 20 days. For the first week, do not have a bath; it is allowed to wash in the shower with warm water, avoiding getting the face wet.
Full recovery after rhinoplasty can take up to a year, although most patients notice significant improvements within a few weeks. Some swelling may persist for several months, especially at the tip of the nose. During this period, it is important to continue to follow the doctor’s recommendations and be patient, as the final result of the surgery will be fully visible only when the entire healing process is complete. It should be noted that regular visits to the doctor are required to monitor the healing process. Sometimes injections may be required to stimulate regeneration.
Possible complications
During surgery, some complications are possible.
- Swelling and bruising are a common reaction of the body to surgery. During the surgery is damaged small blood vessels, which leads to the release of blood into the tissues, forming bruises, and the inflammatory reaction causes swelling.
- Bleeding. They most often occur in the first days after rhinoplasty, when the tissues have not yet completely healed.
- Infections. Any surgical intervention disrupts the integrity of the skin and mucous membranes, which opens the way for bacteria. Non-compliance with hygiene standards after surgery can lead to infection. Also, do not neglect taking antibiotics prescribed by your doctor.
- Scars and roughness. Visible scars may form at the incision site after open rhinoplasty. Roughness can occur due to improper tissue healing or technical nuances during surgery. To minimize the risk of scarring, Yurchenko Team doctors recommend applying special scar healing creams, avoiding sun exposure in the early stages of recovery, and following all the doctor’s recommendations for skin care.
- Changes in the sense of smell or its temporary loss. During the surgery, nasal receptors can be damaged, which temporarily affects the olfactory functions. It can also be caused by swelling of the nasal internal tissues. Usually, the situation improves in 3–4 weeks and does not require intervention.
- Perechondritis. This is an inflammation of the cartilage tissue that can occur after surgery. Perechondritis requires immediate treatment, as it can lead to serious consequences for the patient’s health. Inflammation can occur due to an infection or trauma of the nose that has just been surgically repaired. Symptoms of the complication include pain that increases with touch, swelling and redness, pus discharge, and localized fever.
Important. All the symptoms above are a signal for an immediate visit to a surgeon!
Further treatment of perichondritis is performed by a surgeon. He cleans and drains the surgical field, prescribes local and general antibiotics.
