More About Surgery
No matter how the trends in plastic surgery change, rhinoplasty (plastic surgery of the nose) is consistently among one of the three most popular. For someone it is a childhood dream come true, for others it is a step towards self-acceptance and greater confidence. At the Yurchenko Team, rhinoplasty is a common operation that has been polished to the smallest detail. So today we will talk about all the nuances of the surgery, preparation, and rehabilitation.
Indications for rhinoplasty
To tell the long story short, the main indications for rhinoplasty are aesthetic. Patients can be unsatisfied:
- with the size of the nasal concha;
- disproportion with other parts of the face;
- atypical shape;
- appearance after another surgery, road accidents, and other injuries;
- the presence of a hump;
- thickened, hanging, widened tip;
- large size of the nostrils;
- curvature of the nasal dorsum.
In case of deflection of nasal septum that interferes with breathing. If there are also cysts or growths, it is possible to simultaneously combine nasal plastic surgery and correction of an anatomical defect. Modern techniques allow minimizing trauma to nearby tissues, perform precise, small incisions, and adhere to the patient’s wishes.
Preparation for rhinoplasty
The first step to a beautiful nose begins with a consultation by our doctor at the Yurchenko Team. The specialist assesses the patient’s nasal features and facial proportions. After a detailed discussion of the wishes, the doctor creates a model of the expected result. This allows the patient to clearly visualize the effect of the upcoming surgery.
At the preparation stage for nasal plastic surgery, a preoperative workup is performed. It includes complete blood count and urine test, biochemical blood test, glucose in blood, coagulation panel, AIDS, HIV, HBV and HCV tests, WR, Blood type and Rh factor and CT scan of the nose to assess the anatomical features of bone and cartilage.
It may be required to consult an ENT specialist if the patient has a predisposition to inflammatory processes in the nasopharynx, or anatomical features of the nasal shell or passages. In case of chronic diseases of other organs or systems, other specialists may be involved in counselling. Prior to the operation, the patient is consulted by an anesthesiologist. He asks about allergies, investigates the medical history, and determines the tolerance to anesthesia components.
Types of rhinoplasty
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes just over 2 hours.
Nowadays, there are 2 main techniques of surgical intervention.
- Open rhinoplasty
Open rhinoplasty is used in case of a significant amount of work or repeated interventions. The advantage of this method is the convenience for the surgeon, who has a full view of the field, which ensures better results. The beautiful tip of the nose is better formed with open access.
- Closed rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty involves endonasal access. Symmetrical incisions are made along the nostril, and the surgeon works with the instrument in a limited area of visibility. This method is suitable for minor corrections of the nasal dorsum when there is no great limitation in terms of the complexity of the surgical intervention. Our experience shows that open rhinoplasty provides more predictable and beautiful results, especially when changing the shape of the nasal tip or significant correction of the nasal dorsum. Closed access may be better for small hump corrections. However, in case of more complex interventions, closed rhinoplasty does not provide the same accuracy and control.
Regarding the operation time, rhinoplasty takes an average of 2.5 hours.
Septoplasty is an additional procedure that corrects the nasal septum with preservation of cartilage and bone tissue. It is often combined with rhinoplasty to restore normal breathing.
Complications after rhinoplasty
Bleeding, bruising, and swelling of the nose are possible after the surgery. These are normal responses of the body. If you follow the recommendations during rehabilitation, these difficulties disappear.
Serious complications include: abscess, perforation of the septum, cartilage atrophy, and difficulty breathing through the nose. These types of complications require repeated surgical intervention.
Contraindications
Unfortunately, not all clients are able to undergo rhinoplasty. The main contraindications for nasal plastic surgery include:
- exacerbation of chronic diseases;
- decompensated diabetes mellitus;
- acute inflammatory processes in the nasopharynx;
- pregnancy.
Rehabilitation after nasal plastic surgery
Due to modern tools, rehabilitation after nose surgery is quick and painless. Just a few years ago, rhinoplasty was associated with significant swelling, bruising, wearing a cast for a long time, and inability to breathe normally. However, today, even on the first day after surgery, swelling and bruising are minimal, often absent. Minimally invasive rhinoplasty is a global trend that allows patients to return to their normal life almost immediately, and the doctor to obtain a good aesthetic and predictable result.
After the surgery, the patient may complain of sleepiness, apathy, and difficulty breathing due to tamponade. All this is passes quickly. Based on our experience, patients can walk and eat independently in 3–4 hours.
- Day 1 after surgery
Upon discharge from the clinic, the doctor removes the tamponade from the nose, and the patient can breathe freely. The operated nose is fixed with a special bandage during the surgery. It is a bandage made of lightweight, modern material in the form of a butterfly that holds the tissues in the correct position. Of course, the bandage takes some getting used to. It is maximally comfortable, but at first it may cause discomfort (tightness, heaviness).
- Day 2–10
Numbness, bruises begin to gradually disappear. On the Day 10 after the surgery, the bandage is removed, if necessary, the sutures are also removed.
- 1 month
Primary rehabilitation is complete. In a month after the surgery, a visit to a plastic surgeon is mandatory to evaluate the results of rhinoplasty and monitor the healing process.
Late recovery period: 6 months to 1 year.
Nose becomes more accurate in 6–8 months. The final result of rhinoplasty is in 1 year.
Reasons to choose Yurchenko Team for surgery
Yurchenko Team regularly performs rhinoplasty surgeries. Such surgery requires high qualifications from a plastic surgeon. In our country, such procedures are performed by highly specialized surgeons. Due to this “separation of duties”, each specialist of our team can improve their knowledge and skills in a particular area. This is the philosophy of the Yurchenko Team and the gold standard of all our services.
We work hard to make our services accessible. That’s why we provide consultations and perform surgeries in three locations: Kyiv, Bukovel, and Limassol. Thus, patients can choose the most convenient and comfortable place for the procedure.
