More About Surgery
Fibroadenoma is a type of benign breast tumour. It has the shape of a dense elastic ball with clear borders ranging in size from several millimetres to 5 cm. Mammologists recommend removing the lump to prevent the risk of developing a malignant tumour. This operation can be combined with any type of mammoplasty (breast augmentation, lift, reduction, correction of breast asymmetry). In such cases, doctors at the Yurchenko Team perform simultaneous fibroadenoma removal and breast reshaping under the same anaesthetic. The operation is performed under ultrasound guidance.
Preparation for the removal of fibroadenoma of the mammary gland
Consultation: During the appointment, the doctor tells you in detail about the details of the operation, types of implants, and rehabilitation. It is important for the plastic surgeon to understand what kind of breasts the patient ideally wants to get, so before the visit, the specialist asks you to have an idea of the desired result. Also, the patient must have a consultation with a mammologist who will assess the condition of the fibroadenoma.
Examination. The doctor assesses the condition of the tissues, the degree of skin elasticity, and takes measurements to select the best implant option depending on the upcoming breast surgery and the patient’s wishes.
Visit to a mammalian surgeon. The doctor assesses the condition of the mammary glands and determines the location of the lump. For this purpose, the mammologist prescribes an ultrasound or mammography. Then the surgeon discusses the results obtained, and together with the mammologist, they determine the tactics of joint surgery.
Comprehensive Medical Evaluation. Before the operation, all patients undergo an ultrasound of the mammary glands, an ECG, a number of tests (general blood and urine tests, biochemical blood tests, blood sugar, coagulogram, AIDS, HIV, hepatitis B and C, Wasserman’s reaction, blood type and Rh factor), and are examined by a gynaecologist, therapist, and anaesthetist.
What implants are used?
For a plastic surgery professional from the Yurchenko Team, it is important that the result of plastic surgery fully satisfies the client’s wishes. Therefore, in their practice, they use implants that fully meet high quality standards and have a lifetime warranty for integrity. These are anatomically shaped and round implants certified in Ukraine from such manufacturers as: Polytech, Mentor, Motiva, Eurosilicone.
Upon discharge, the doctor gives each patient all warranty documents with unique serial numbers of the implants.
How does the surgery to remove fibroadenoma of the breast go?
The operation lasts up to 1.5 hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. First, the mammologist carefully removes the neoplasm. All actions are performed under the control of an ultrasound machine. After the mammologist’s work is completed, the plastic surgeon performs mammoplasty – installs implants of the chosen shape and volume. If necessary, the surgeon also corrects gland deformation or asymmetry. Depending on the type of correction required, the access is determined – under the breast or through the areola.
The plastic surgeon uses special threads that dissolve on their own after the operation. Therefore, there is no need to remove stitches in the traditional way. After rehabilitation, a small white strip (no more than 1 mm wide) remains at the incision site, which is completely invisible.
Rehabilitation
After surgery, patients are under 24-hour observation in the clinic’s inpatient department. On the 3rd, 7th, 14th day, the doctor conducts control examinations to assess the condition of the breast, disinfects the sutures, and changes the plasters.
The first 14 days of rehabilitation are necessary:
- Avoid any contact with water on the incision. At this time, showering and water procedures are excluded. After two weeks of ‘quarantine’, the doctor allows a shower followed by treatment of the sutures with chlorhexidine.
- Avoid sudden hand movements and physical exercises.
- Take antibiotics regularly and avoid alcohol.
- Sleep in a semi-sitting position. You will have to stay awake on your stomach for up to 6 months, on your side for up to 3 months.
During the first month it is necessary:
- Wear compression garments around the clock, thanks to which the breast is fixed in the correct position. The cost of the operation includes 1 set of such underwear. After that, compression garments are worn during sleep for another two months.
- Refrain from physical activity for a month after the operation. You can return to the gym very gradually, only under the supervision of a trainer. Loads on the shoulder girdle are prohibited to avoid the risk of implant displacement. After 4-6 months, you can fully exercise in the gym.
Possible complications after removal of breast fibroadenoma
Breast fibroadenoma removal is usually a routine operation. However, no one is immune to possible complications. Here are some of them:
- Bleeding and bruising. Bleeding can occur during or after surgery, leading to the formation of haematomas (accumulation of blood under the skin). This complication may require additional surgery to remove blood clots and stop the bleeding.
- Scars. There are always scars after surgery. Although they usually become less noticeable over time, some patients may develop keloid or hypertrophic scars, which can be aesthetically unpleasant and require additional treatment. Doctors at the Yurchenko Team will select a course of hardware cosmetic procedures that will help minimise the size of the scar on the operated breast.
- Loss of sensitivity. There may be a loss or change in sensitivity in the area of surgery, including the nipples. This is usually temporary, but in some cases, the loss of sensation can be permanent.
- Asymmetry. Removal of fibroadenomas can lead to breast asymmetry, as part of the tissue is removed. This can be noticeable, especially if a large fibroadenoma is removed. It is possible to correct this defect using lipofilling. The area with the tissue defect is filled with the patient’s adipose tissue.
Sometimes patients experience a recurrence of fibroadenoma. The neoplasm may reappear in the same or another part of the breast, which may require repeated surgery.
Before undergoing surgery, it is important to discuss all potential risks and complications with a qualified surgeon to be well prepared for possible outcomes.
Reasons to have surgery at Yurchenko Team
Many plastic surgery clinics offer fibroadenoma removal. But only at Yurchenko Team, this is done by plastic surgeons who operate exclusively on the breast. In our team, each doctor has his or her own specialisation. This is the principle of our philosophy.
In the case of fibroadenoma removal, the operation will be performed by Denys Yurchenko, the ideological inspirer of the Yurchenko Team and the creator of the unique 70/30 anchor lift technique. If necessary, Dmytro Mikulich, a mammologist, oncologist and reconstructive surgeon, will work in tandem with the doctor.
We perform fibroadenoma removal in three clinics in Kyiv, Bukovel and Limassol. Choose your option and make an appointment for a consultation today.
