Breast Asymmetry Correction

A woman’s breasts are asymmetrical. You know this yourself. As a rule, this difference is almost imperceptible and does not cause discomfort.

But there is also a strongly pronounced asymmetry. It often causes not only psychological but also physical discomfort. Why does this happen? Among the main reasons:

• Deformation of the mammary gland due to improper breastfeeding;
• Congenital asymmetries and deformities.

Many people ask: how to correct breast asymmetry? Usually, 2 methods are used:

1. Installation of implants of different sizes, without lifting.
2. Lift with access through the areola, vertical or anchor.

Correction of breast asymmetry is a rather complicated operation. It requires precision and a clear understanding of what size, type and shape of implants will create the desired beautiful shapes and eliminate asymmetry. Sometimes after surgery, additional correction under local anesthesia may be required.

Asymmetry correction: preparation for surgery

Consultation. At the consultation, the doctor tells you about the surgery, restrictions during rehabilitation, and answers all your questions. It is very important that the patient has an idea of the ideal breast shape for herself before the visit.

Examination. The plastic surgeon takes measurements to determine the degree of asymmetry, the level of nipple position, and assesses the condition of the tissues. This data allows you to choose a correction method and determine the ideal type, structure, and shape of the implant.

 Comprehensive Medical Evaluation. The operation is possible only after undergoing a diagnostic examination (ultrasound of the mammary glands, ECG), a set of tests (complete blood count and urine test, biochemical blood test, blood sugar, coagulogram, test for AIDS, HIV, hepatitis B and C, Wasserman reaction, blood type and Rh factor), examination by a gynecologist, therapist, anesthesiologist.

What implants are used?

How does the surgery go?

Mammoplasty takes up to 1.5 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Various techniques can be used for the operation:

• Installation of implants of different sizes, without lifting. The doctor compensates for the missing breast volume and eliminates visual disproportion. The incision line is made in the natural fold of the breast and remains invisible.
• Periareolar lift. The incision runs along the areola through which the implant is placed. Excess skin is carefully removed, and the nipples are lifted higher.
• Vertical or anchor lift – when it is necessary to perform a simultaneous breast reduction along with the correction of asymmetry.
• Scars after surgery become invisible over time. They narrow into a small strip no more than 1 mm wide.

Rehabilitation

During rehabilitation, the patient must follow the recommendations exactly. Restrictions relate to those everyday moments that can negatively affect the fixation of the implant in the chest and provoke its displacement.

Observation in the clinic during the first 24 hours is mandatory. I carry out additional examinations on days 3, 7, 14 to disinfect the sutures, replace the patches, assess the condition of the breast and the patient’s general well-being.

For a successful recovery, it is necessary:

• Wear compression garments for a month around the clock. Each patient receives such a set of underwear after surgery. After the first month and up to 3 months, compression garments are worn only at night.
• Do not raise your arms above the shoulders during the first month and do not make sudden movements.
• Follow the prescribed treatment, including antibiotics. The first week without alcohol.
• Avoid driving for the first two weeks. Air travel is also prohibited.
• It is strictly forbidden to wet your breasts for the first two weeks. After the 14th day, the doctor re-examines the breast. If there are no signs of inflammation, then a shower is allowed. But be sure to treat the stitches with chlorhexidine.
• You should return to the gym gradually and only with a trainer. 6 months after the operation, you can fully return to physical activity.

Expected result and its duration after breast asymmetry correction 

Breast asymmetry correction surgery is designed to equalize the shape, size, and position of the breasts, providing a symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing appearance. After surgery, patients can expect an improved appearance of their breasts, which contributes to increased self-confidence and body satisfaction.

The results of the surgery are usually visible immediately after the bandages are removed, but the final result becomes apparent in a few months when swelling disappears and scars are completely healed. The duration of the effect of the surgery can be long-lasting, especially if you follow a healthy lifestyle and maintain a stable weight. However, it should be borne in mind that the natural aging process and weight changes can affect the appearance of the breasts over time.

Possible complications after breast asymmetry correction

Certain complications may occur after surgery, such as infections that manifest as redness, pain, swelling, and wound discharge. Infections require immediate medical intervention to prescribe antibiotics or additional surgical treatment.

Another complication can be the formation of hematomas and seromas. Hematomas are accumulations of blood under the skin that can cause pain and swelling, and seromas are accumulations of serous fluid. Both complications may require drainage.

There is a risk of capsular contracture, when a hard capsule of scar tissue forms around the implant, which can lead to breast deformity and pain. This complication may require a second surgery.

There may be changes in nipple and breast sensitivity, which may be temporary or permanent due to nerve damage during surgery. Scars can also be visible and cosmetically unacceptable. In some cases, hypertrophic scars or keloids develop, requiring additional treatment.
